Coleus forskohlii is a fleshy, perennial herb, which has an aroma similar to camphor; its spiked flowers are typical of the mint family. Unlike other plants in the Lamiaceae family, the principal part used medicinally is coleus’ pale fibrous roots. Coleus forskohlii grows well in warm temperate or subtropical areas, It is now grown around the world as an ornamental plant.

Coleus forskohlii has long been used in traditional chinese herbal medicine and Indian (Ayurvedic) medicine. Coleus gained popularity when in the 70’s a Western researcher found a chemical extract from the root called, Forskolin. Forskolin was named after the Finnish botanist, Forskal. Forskolin is responsible for almost all pharmacological activities attributed to Coleus forskohlii; extracts of this constituent have been used in nearly all studies. There is evidence that the plant has other uses, such as volatile oils and other diterpenoids, may contribute to the pharmacological activity and absorption of Forskolin.
